Kids in the Kitchen #MakeItMango

Last week I took my three daughters to The Chopping Block in Chicago for a “Kids in the Kitchen” cooking class with the National Mango Board. We learned how to cook with mangos, which was fun and super tasty, but we also learned a lot more about mangos which was awesome because we don’t buy fresh mangos. We buy frozen mangos for our smoothies in the morning. I never even knew how to choose a fresh, ripe mango. But now I do!

We learned that there are 6 varieties of mangos which are available in the U.S. year-round. Here in the U.S. mangos come from Mexico, Guatemala, Peru Haiti, Ecuador and Brazil. Did you know that mangos are the most popular fruit in the world?!? Mangos are also very good for you! They contain 100% vitamin C, 35% vitamin A and 12% fiber. This is a fantastic reason to pick up some fresh mangos and keep them in the house!

The folks from the National Mango Board were very knowledgeable and the Kids in the Kitchen class was fun. We first learned how to choose a ripe mango, which was interesting because I would have chosen by color, but that is not how you choose a mango, considering they are all different colors. You actually squeeze them to feel if they are too hard. Now I know! Next we learned how to cut a mango – another thing I did not know. Since we buy them frozen, they are already cut up.

The Cinco De Mango Quesadillas with Classic Mango Salsa was my absolute favorite. This was also Becca’s favorite. We loved the salsa so much, we went home and literally ate it off of a spoon. The next day I made a salad and topped it with the mango salsa, it was delicious!

Me and the girls had a great time at The Chopping Block in Chicago, learning about mangos with The National Mango Board. If you get a chance, check out http://www.mango.org for more info on mangos and great recipes too.
