Does Your Child’s Bedtime Routine Include TV Time?

This conversation is brought to you by our friends at mybluedish.com.

Am I the only mom out there that let’s the little’s watch some TV before going to bed? I wrote a ‘debate’ post last year about TV’s in kids’ bedrooms, because my kids do have a TV in their rooms. Does that make me a bad mom?

We have bedtime routines, not only with the little kids, but even with the teens. They just don’t realize it haha. The teens get home from school, Mike gets home from work, we eat dinner, everyone does their chores and homework… and then they settle in for the night – in their rooms, with their TV’s for an hour or two before they go to bed. We have pretty much the same routine with our two little kids. But their routine includes bath time before quiet time in their room with the TV.

Is this wrong?

It isn’t for us, because it works.

We used to switch from letting Gracie pick out a movie, to letting her watch Netflix, to letting her watch one of the kids channels for a while. She used to love watching Sprout, up until about a month ago. We changed our cable package. We went from cable to a satellite company and now we don’t get Gracie’s favorite channel. I’m not very happy about that because Sprout used to have the “good night show” and it was nice and quiet and calm for the last few hours of the night. Perfect for her. I’m wondering if we will be keeping this satellite company or switch back to the old one. We’re having a hard time letting her watch Netflix too, because our internet is giving us such a hard time. We have quite a few options where we live like mybluedish.com and some others. We’re not sure what we’re going to do just yet. In the mean time, we’ve been sticking to plain old DVD’s.

Do your kids watch TV before bedtime?

What do they watch? Do you put a movie on or do they watch the cable channels?

  1. we sometimes put on a movie for my daughter, and it helps her relax and go to sleep.

  2. I don’t have kids, but I totally watch TV *Myself* as part of my wind-down bedtime routine! It really helps me turn my brain off and relax a little bit.

  3. What a great routine you have going. We let our son watch a little TV before bedtime too. Usually 30 minutes to an hour depending on how the day goes. It’s an nice way to get some quiet time and prepare him for some shut eye!

  4. We also have TV for bedtime routine.. to an extend; my daughter gets to watch 30 minutes before bedtime, which 8PM is when she turns it off and heads to bed, for us, this works well.. some it may not..

  5. we do often watch things together before bed….and then we go up and whoever is tucking kids in reads with them in their rooms 🙂

  6. My little one is only two so we only have a 30 minute scheduled tv time early in the morning. I’m usually cuddling with her and sleeping as she watches tv. 🙂

  7. We don’t have kids, but I wouldn’t think this is wrong. It’s a great way to wind down at night!

  8. My son gets thirty minutes {enforced by a sleep timer because he can beg like no other} before bed, but he has to be already IN bed & ready to sleep so that he doesn’t get energy again after the show is over. It works for us! I’m sorry you lost Sprout, it’s a great channel.

  9. We don’t usually have the kids watch TV before bed, but hubby and I usually do as a way to unwind from the day.
