Mastitis: Oooh that’s a Horrible Word!

Breastfeeding

April from Mama on a Green Mission and Courtney from Joy of Momma Joyner host this breastfeeding meme every Tuesday and the topic is always different.

This weeks topic is Mastitis.

Ooooh that’s a horrible word!

I’ve had this quite a few times and it’s the most miserable thing ever!

For me, it always starts with an over production of milk for one reason or another and then leads to a clogged milk duct… which leads to the infection (mastitis). I know when I get the clogged duct, that I better get rid of it super quick or the fever is next. As soon as I get that fever – BAM! It all hits so quickly!

If I could just foresee what was going to happen – I could put an instant stop to it by pumping, therefore not getting a clogged duct.

This is the most painful thing I have every felt! It not only hurts to the touch, but it hurts when it isn’t even being touched and feeding – OMGosh – feeding is so painful too.

I’ve had this twice with Jack, who is only 4 months old. The first time was because I accidentally ate too many oatmeal bars my mom made. They were so so good I just kept on munching on them. And yeah… oatmeal is an ingredient that increases your milk supply so that is what did it. I should’ve just pumped and it never would’ve gotten any worse. But it all happens so fast, I just don’t think.

Anyway, Mastitis is an infection in your breast that is usually red, hot and sore. You can actually see the red blotches. I showed Mike and he could not believe it! Mastitis causes a fever of 101 or higher. This is usually caused by a clogged milk duct but can be caused by other reasons like cracked nipples which can let germs get inside the nipple.

This happened to me with my first baby. Unfortunately, I was very inexperienced and did not ‘know’ how to breastfeed and had no support. I did get cracked nipples and would bleed every single time I fed or pumped. All of this put together is why I stopped breastfeeding so early. I only made it about six weeks :(

The best way to get rid of mastitis is to breastfeed like a crazy person – seriously! As painful as it is, you need to nurse and massage your breast at the same time to ‘work out’ that clogged duct. Oh I could cry just thinking about it. Hot showers help the pain a little. Again, you can let the water run on your breast while massaging the lump – OUCH!

The best way to never get mastitis is to recognize a clogged milk duct as soon as possible! Once you *think* you feel a lump in your breast – MASSAGE that sucker OUT!

This last time I got mastitis, some bloggy mommy friends suggested that you are not supposed to wear a bra with a wire. I always do because I am larger breasted. As soon as I heard this – I QUIT! It’s not worth another round of mastitis!

Well… that’s all I have for this week! I’ll leave you with a photo of my little man and I:

Comments

  1. I never breast fed but I can’t imagine getting that infection. OUCH!

  2. I am so glad that I haven’t got mastitis yet!

  3. I have had mastitis too. Oh gosh. Horrible, horrible as my dad used to say. It’s awful. I had it AFTER being done nursing. And while pregnant. It’s like once I got it during nursing, I had it several other times too. No fun! I pushed through it though.

  4. I had this very unpleasant condition–turns out my son’s tongue-tie didn’t help anything!

  5. I was lucky enough to avoid getting mastitis while I was breastfeeding, but I did have a blocked duct once and that was horrible in itself. But, the pain was worth it knowing I was doing what was best for my baby!

  6. i’ve had it too.. so extremely painful.. icried myself to sleep every night

  7. I have heard how awful mastitis is and I thank God I haven’t had to deal with it but I do feel bad for you and those who have. I applaud you for hanging in there and continuing to breastfeed! I can imagine how hard it must have been! Way to go, mama!!! :)
