How To Approach Diseases & Their Vaccines

If you are pregnant, you are probably starting to think about those very first vaccines that your little newborn will receive just minutes/hours after being born. If you are confused or concerned with these vaccines, I would recommend going through this list of questions that has been put together by one of my friends. She got this list from “Modern Alternative Mama” and “and other times”. You might find this to be a helpful way to start your search on the vaccines that you will or won’t be giving your new little baby.

Maybe you have older children and are not pregnant, but you are now interested in starting your own search to find out what is best for your family regarding the child vaccination schedule.
The Dr.’s should not be the one making the decisions for you (as a parent). YOU are the parent. YOU should be doing the research and studying to decide what YOU are going to have done to your child and know WHY you are doing it. Far too many parents are uneducated on this topic and become robots at the Dr.’s office who hold their children’s leg while they get shot up with ‘something’ in which they have not done any research on.
The following is a template that I borrowed from a friend on how to approach learning about diseases and their vaccines in order to asses the real risks to the diseases & the real risks to the vaccines. Remember to consider your source (pro-, anti-, or neutral) and to consider both sides to the story. Keep in mind the immense benefits of healthy living from whole foods to sanitation.
Questions to ask about vaccines:
  1. What is the recommended vaccine schedule?
  2. What safety studies have been done on each vaccine?  By whom were they conducted?  Is there any conflicting data?
  3. What diseases are the vaccines meant to prevent?
  4. For each disease, what are the symptoms?  Severity?  Likelihood of contracting?  Likelihood of having complications?  What are those potential complications?
  5. What are each vaccine’s side effects?  What are the likelihood of severe side effects for each vaccine?
  6. What are the ingredients in each vaccine? What does research tell us about the danger and safety of the vaccine ingredient?
  7. What studies have been done on vaccine efficacy?
  8. How were the illnesses treated and why were/are they deadly without vaccines?
  9. What issues surrounding vaccines are controversial?  Why is this so?  What research has been done on these issues, and by whom?
  10. When is each vaccine supposed to be administered?  When is it supposed to protect?  Why is it administered when it is?  How long is protection supposed to last?
  11. When looking at studies, who did the studies?  Is the original, full version available?  Were there any financial conflicts of interest?  Do several studies by different groups show the same results?  What are the person’s credentials (especially if it is “non mainstream” or ghost-written)?
  12. Is there any worrying anecdotal evidence?  Do any studies support this concern?
  13. Did vaccines eradicate disease, or are/were there other factors?  Which were most effective and most important?
  14. What is herd immunity and what does it have to do with vaccines?
  15. Does anyone in my family have any specific recommendations or contraindications to receiving certain/all vaccines (weak immune system, allergies, genetic disorders, etc.)?
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE DISEASE
  1. Name of the disease
  2. Description of the disease
  3. Length of time from initial infection to end of all symptoms
  4. Infectious period
  5. Normal symptoms of the disease
  6. Known serious consequences of the disease
  7. Proportion of persons infected developing serious consequences
  8. Transmission route of the disease
  9. Prevalence of the disease
  10. Treatments of the disease and efficacy of those treatments
  11. Relevant research about the disease
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE VACCINE
  1. Name of the vaccine
  2. Company that makes the vaccine
  3. Contents of the vaccine
  4. The significance of whether or not the vaccine is live
  5. History of development of the vaccine
  6. Known side-effects of the vaccine and rate of incidence of those side-effects
  7. Possible side-effects not yet acknowledged by the vaccine maker
  8. Relevant research into the vaccine
  9. How effective is the vaccine at preventing the disease?
  10. What is the vaccine meant to do? (Many vaccines are not meant to prevent infection or transmission).
  11. Number of cases reported each year.
  12. Number of deaths reported each year from the vaccine and natural disease.
=========================================
Once you are finished researching these diseases and their vaccines, you will feel more confident with your decision to go forth with the recommended vaccines on schedule, go with an alternative schedule, or not vaccinate your child at all.
I believe it is our duty as parents to be educated about vaccines before allowing our children to be injected. Too many parents allow a needle into their children simply because the Dr.’s “said so”. This is poor parenting. The Dr.’s should not be the one making the decisions for you (as a parent). YOU are the parent. YOU decide what you are going to have done to your child and know WHY you are doing it.
Here is a list of ingredients in vaccines.
